Phoenix Gaming crowned Champions at Gamer.LK’s Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2018 powered by Dialog Gaming

For the eleventh consecutive year, Gamer.LK – the leader in Esports and Digital Entertainment experiences, organized the national Esports Championship – Sri Lanka Cyber Games (SLCG) powered by Dialog Gaming. Considered Sri Lanka’s flagship Esports tournament, SLCG 2018, provides the platform for Esports athletes from across the country to showcase their talents and  marks the end of the local Esports calendar.

Sri Lanka Cyber Games has evolved into a grand celebration of Esports

Originating from humble beginnings with a few hundred participants in 2008, SLCG has evolved into a grand celebration of Esports and video gaming. The Championship drew over 3,000 participants this year who took part across the most popular gaming titles in the country, battling it out in-game with live commentary with matches being on display on giant screens as well as streamed online.

SLCG was hosted within Play Expo Sri Lanka, the only Digital Entertainment & Technology expo in Sri Lanka also organized by Gamer,LK, showcasing the latest technology and experiences available for digital entertainment enthusiasts and anyone interested in audio, video, music, movies, gaming and their related technologies. Play Expo Sri Lanka boasted a prize pool of over 5 million LKR, the largest prize pool ever offered for Esports and video gaming in the country.

The 9 main Esports clans of Sri Lanka, recognized by the Sri Lanka Esports Association which are Death Pact, Division Esports, Evox E-Sports, Maximum eSports, n00b Alliance, Phoenix Gaming, TECH Morph Gamers, Wolfgang e-Sports and Xiphos eSports took part in the tournament.

Phoenix Gaming defends Championship, Xiphos Esports comes second

After three days of intense, nail-biting Esports action and fierce in-game rivalry, Phoenix Gaming defended the coveted overall Championship title for the third consecutive year with Xiphos Esports and n00b Alliance securing the second and third places respectively.

Thanks largely to the efforts of Gamer.LK in promoting Esports as a gender-neutral sport, this year’s Championship saw an increased participation of girl gamers with an exhibition Women’s Call of Duty match also taking place at the event. In addition, a separate Kid’s Esports segment was also held in the aim of promoting competitive video gaming to the future generations.

Inaugural eRacer Championship and Mobile Gaming Championship

Alongside SLCG 2018, this year also saw the introduction of the inaugural eRacer Championship in association with TopGear. Complete with Red Bull racing seats, racing wheels and pedals, large-screen TVs and the tracks on Project CARS, the Championship was hosted in the aim of seeking out Sri Lanka’s fastest eRacer.

In addition, this year also saw the inclusion of Sri Lanka’s first-ever competitive Mobile-Gaming Championship with the Mobile Partner Huawei, showcasing popular mobile titles such as Clash Royale, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile and Mobile Legends.

Industry leaders powering Sri Lanka Cyber Games

Leading companies extended their support to SLCG this year. Dialog Gaming stepped in to power SLCG and showcased an array of digital entertainment products and services at the Dialog experience zones at Play Expo. Red Bull came on board as the official energy drink partner and DELL became the Gold Sponsor. The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) committed their support to the event in their efforts to promote the Sri Lankan startup eco-system in the digital entertainment space and Electronic Sports.

Huawei was the Mobile Partner for the event while Honda was the Motorbike Partner and they gave away a Honda Navi to the winner of their mobile game Rider Rush. FriMi came onboard as the official Digital Banking Partner and offered discounts at the Mega Geek Sale happening on all three days of the event. MSI, a long standing supporter of Esports was the technology partner and KISS FM was the Radio Partner for the event. ReadMe was the Digital Media Partner for the event with Elektro Revo being the Lighting Partner and LetMeKnow as the Coverage Partner for the event.

Noob Alliance named best Sri Lankan clan of 2018

Noob Alliance named best Sri Lankan clan of 2018

The Sri Lanka Esports Association (SLESA), the governing body for Esports in Sri Lanka founded by Gamer.LK and consisting of the 9 main Esports clans in the country recently awarded the National Esports Awards at the Sri Lanka Cyber Games Championship held last weekend. The awards are held to recognise outstanding performance, contribution and ethics in the Esports scene in Sri Lanka, and is calculated based on a number of factors decided and agreed on by SLESA.

The winner of the best clan award

Best Clan
Noob Alliance

Second place
Phoenix Gaming

Third place
Tech Morph

The best clan award is a highly contested title which has been won by Phoenix Gaming for the past 4 years. Noob Alliance managed to break the winning streak this year by taking the title for the first time. The best clan award takes into account the following aspects of a clan

  • Performance of their members throughout the year (accounts for 40% of points)
  • How diversified their performance has been – the more titles the better (10%)
  • Organisation points for how structured the clan is (20%)
  • The clans contribution to Esports (10%)
  • Ethics – whether or not the clan has members who have been banned or warned (10%)
  • Community poll (10%)

Phoenix Gaming came out on top in the performance portion of the calculation with a small 4-point lead. Noob Alliance overtook PnX with points in title diversification, ethics and the popular vote, thus establishing that a clan must score high on all factors in order to be crowned best clan in Sri Lanka. The precedent has been set, and clans will be pushing to better their organisations to reach for the ultimate title next year.

The winners of the individual awards

The awards committee looks at the best performing individuals from each recognised SLESA title based on ranked tournaments help from SLCG 2017 until the last ranked tournament before SLCG this year. These are the athletes that stood out in their field and were recognised with best athlete of the year medals for their respective titles.

Sri Lanka’s ultimate gaming event, SLT e-Sports Championship 2018 comes to a successful close

Sri Lanka’s ultimate gaming event, SLT e-Sports Championship 2018 comes to a successful close

SLT e-Sports Championship 2018, the Esports event with the largest prize pool in the country, organised by Sri Lanka’s premier telecommunication provider Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) in partnership with the Esports Partner, Gamer.LK, returned for its fourth consecutive year on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of November at BMICH, alongside the INFOTEL 2018 exhibition.

This year’s event saw record numbers of participation with Esports athletes taking part from across the country making the event a platform for bringing communities together. Phoenix Gaming emerged the overall Champions, with Noob Alliance coming in close as runners-up and Xiphos Esports coming in at third place.

With a prize pool of over a million rupees in cash, this year’s Championship featured many popular online multiplayer gaming titles such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2 and League of Legends as well as single player titles such as FIFA 19, Project CARS 2, Injustice 2 and Fortnite with mobile game titles, Clash Royale and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile also included. With Sri Lanka’s first multi-camera production at an Esports event, this year’s Championship kicked off with matches being broadcast on the giant screen at the venue with a livestream also being broadcast on Facebook, Twitch, YouTube and Mixer for viewers who were not at the venue.

An Esports awareness area, equipped with facilities and demonstrations to educate visitors and newcomers to the event about Esports and its benefits, was showcased at this year’s event with careful attention being paid on the overall spectator experience. A dedicated mobile games arena was also setup at the venue in addition to the professional Esports arena where Esports athletes battled it out for 3 days. A Women’s Championship which saw the participation of many female Esports/ athletes was also held as well as a new Under 12 Kids segment being introduced as a new addition to this year’s event. SLT also held a Cosplay competition alongside the event, encouraging cosplayers to dress up as their favourite characters.

SLT also teased the launch of a mobile game development competition aimed at showcasing groundbreaking innovations and new trends in the mobile entertainment industry. Applicants will be able to enroll for the competition, for either Android or iOS mobile game applications, after it is launched in the near future.

SLT also launched their exclusive SLT eSports platform to the online gamers of Sri Lanka at the Championship, making SLT the first operator in South Asia to launch such a service. The launch was well-received by gamers who appreciate the efforts taken by SLT to improve their Esports experience.

SLT is no stranger to the Sri Lankan Esports scene as they have continued to empower Esports in the country since the inaugural SLT Esports Championship in 2015. which became an instant success. This year marked the initiation of new types of Esports events presented by SLT, held across different formats and regions of the country and aimed at promoting Esports and strengthening the SLT brand offering to the youth segment. The successful completion of the SLT Esports Championship 2018 marks the end of the Esports activities for this year.

The SLT e-Sports Championship was played on a network backbone powered exclusively by Sri Lanka’s Number 1 broadband network – SLT Broadband, famous for its low latency, dedicated and reliable connectivity which is compulsory for Esports and gaming. Showcasing speeds of over 100Mbps and optimized packet routing paths, gamers received an unparalleled broadband experience at the event.
