Sri Lanka Esports hoisted the national flag at yet another International Esports event earlier last month, the IESF Esports World Championship 2021. Organized by the International Esports Federation (IESF), this year’s championship hosted at Eilat, Israel was the 13th instalment since its inception in 2009.
The grand finals of the championship also held significance as one of the first non-virtual Esports events since the pandemic and brought together finalists from 85 nations to a physical competition.
The IESF Esports World Championship is the Esports parallel to the Olympics, wherein each nation brings forward their finest athletes to compete across multiple game titles. This year, the championship had four official titles: DOTA 2, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Tekken 7 and eFootball 2021, with Audition being held as a promotional title. This year the Championship also had a prize pool of USD 50,000.
Safwan ‘CB’ Mansoor playing Audition and Mohammed Shihab Mohammed Rizan playing eFootball 2022 made it through to the physical Grand Finals in Israel.
Mohammed Shihab Mohammed Rizan is one of the nation’s finest eFootball players. He represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Games 2018 Regional Qualifiers for Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) as part of the team of National Esports Athletes by Sri Lanka Esports. He has continued his journey as an athlete, gaining experience with each encounter he faces. He was Sri Lanka’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of this year’s World Championship. At the grand finals, Shihab went head to head against Nigeria, Georgia, Mongolia, and Mexico in eFootball 2021 and despite a valiant effort was unable to acquire a placement.
Safwan ‘CB’ Mansoor is a prolific Esports athlete within Sri Lanka and spearheads one of the nation’s leading Esports clans – Phoenix Gaming. Despite his focus on racing and football games, Safwan proved his more recent foray into Audition more than successful at the IESF World Championship 2021. After a series of intense matches against Thailand, Brazil, Peru and Korea in the grand finals, Safwan successfully clinched fourth place for Sri Lanka by beating Esports juggernauts South Korea.
Sri Lanka Esports is backed by the strength and commitment of its main sponsor Dialog and geared with Asus Republic of Gamers as the Official Gaming Laptop partner alongside Gamer.LK as the strategic partner.
As one of Sri Lanka’s largest telecom service providers, Dialog is known for their home broadband and wide range of data plans, which connects gamers all around the country. Dialog also has a gaming subsidiary called Dialog Gaming, which hosts gaming and Esports competitions. Recently, Dialog Gaming in collaboration with local developers launched MegaPlay, an all-in-one e-Gaming mobile app, featuring a gamut of hyper-casual games, to the delight of gamers island-wide.
ASUS Republic of Gamers, with their lineup of high end gaming laptops, which include the Zephyrus, Zephyrus Duo, Strix Scar and ROG Flow series, offers gamers a complete line of innovative products known for performance and quality, such as their; laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, audio equipment, routers and peripherals. ROG also participates in and sponsors major local & international gaming events.
Along with the support of these partnerships, each tournament brings the athletes a wealth of experience laying the foundation for our nation to make waves in the global stage of Esports in the near future.

Sri Lanka’s premier Esports company Gamer.LK has announced that 6 Sri Lankan Cricketing legends have joined this year’s Esports Premier League – a competitive PUBG Mobile league with a Rs. 1 million prize pool. They have each joined a franchise team to mentor the young Esports athletes that will be recruited, bringing vast sporting experience to the table from their decades long Cricketing careers. Sanath Jayasuriya joins the Southern Sharks, Lasith Malinga joins the Kandurata Kings, Russel Arnold joins the Northern Rangers, Chaminda Vaas joins the Rajarata Giants, T M Dilshan joins the Sabaragamuwa Knights and Angelo Mathews joins the Western Warriors. The league has 3 more franchise slots open for buy-in.
Russel Arnold had this to say “I am excited for Gamer.LK and the Singer Esports Premier League’s future in Sri Lanka. What an amazing opportunity for local talent to shine and possibly make it to the big stage! Loving the part as Northern Rangers team mentor, a different kind of sport but the passion remains the same. I really want to see Esports take off in a big way in Sri Lanka. It is encouraging that so many great brands have backed this league too. That alone shows the potential seen in this tournament. I am looking forward to this event.”
“The format we have introduced this year enables any gamer across the island to compete and get recruited into one of the 12 franchised teams. With Rs. 1 million up for grabs, and the chance to play with Sri Lanka’s top Esports talent, we’ve created a clear pathway for any aspiring Esports athlete to reach the top and be rewarded for it. We’re excited about Angelo, Vaas, Malinga, Sanath, Dilshan and Russel coming onboard, and look forward to seeing them impart their invaluable sporting wisdom to the youngsters. Our vision for Esports in Sri Lanka gets closer to realisation with the help of these legends, and we’re grateful for their support.” said Raveen Wijayatilake, CEO of Gamer.LK and the founder President of the Sri Lanka Esports Association.

The top 60 ranked players are then included in a team auction where managers of each team will bid on and recruit 5 players. The recruited players will get virtual face-time with their respective mentors, which will set the tone for a week of competitive matches and the grand finals weekend. With Rs. 1 million in prize money on the line, the best teams will train their mental focus, teamwork and game strategy in order to better the competition.

- PMCO group stages concluded last week (August 22nd)
- Wolfgang NRC Esports place 6th during group stages, with 112 overall points
- PMCO Fall Split ‘21 South Asia Wildcard Grand Finals begin next week
- Winner of PMCO grand finals to move on to the PMPL Season 4
PUBG Mobile Club Open a.k.a PMCO is one of the biggest PUBG Mobile events in the APAC region. It is ‘the’ go-to tournament for every Pro PUBGM player in the region to show off their skills on the big stage. 1,000s of players from the region take part in the tournament, mainly to progress further and secure a spot in the PUBG Mobile Pro League (PMPL). And from Sri Lanka, a handful of teams were invited for the event.
Group stage matches were conducted throughout the week and only one team representing Sri Lanka managed to crawl their way to the top of the boards – Wolfgang NRC Esports. They had a rough start in the early stages, being bottom of the first group stage matches. However, they made an insane comeback as the tournament progressed, stomping on every single opponent they faced throughout the bracket. This allowed them to make it to the top of the leaderboards, where they managed to secure 6th place at the end of the group stages – with 2 chicken dinners, 38 kills, and 112 overall points to their name. With the 6th place finish they secured a spot to play in the Grand Finals of PMCO Spring Split 2021 which will take place next week.
During last year’s PMCO event NRC Esports managed to secure 4th place at the Grand Finals – missing last year’s PMPL by 2 crucial points. This year the competition is tougher, with only the 1st place finish getting the chance to play at PMPL. However, with the performances this team has put out throughout the group stages, they certainly stand a chance in the Grand Finals event.
The players of NRC Esports have put up an amazing fight going against some of the best, while putting the Lankan pride back on the map for the PUBG Mobile scene. There is also no doubt that their victories have made many Sri Lankans in the PUBGM scene proud. They have also shown that they’re a true force to reckon with, due to their back to back performances during both this and last year’s PMCO events. NRC Esports have truly showcased their skill, proving once again that Wolfgang NRC Esports is one of the best teams in Sri Lanka to step into the PUBG Mobile Esports world and the best chance for a Sri Lankan team to take part in the PMPL!
Be sure to stay tuned to Gamer.LK’s website and social media for updates regarding PMPL, PUBG Mobile and other Esports news.
