Top 10: Richest Players Of All Time

Top 10: Richest Players Of All Time

The esports millionaires club is an exclusive bunch. Very few players have crossed the threshold. In fact a total of 68 players have made the club to date. One game has contributed 89% of millionaire club entrants. Or maybe you can attribute this to one event.

Valve’s The International has created 61 millionaires in esports. We say ‘Valve’, but in reality the community created them, Valve just enabled it to happen. Now, we say “richest” players, but this is based entirely on prize earnings – we do not take into account salary, endorsements, or any other form of supplementary income.

‘E my sports’ Simpsons episode makes waves

‘E my sports’ Simpsons episode makes waves

Popular and long-running TV series The Simpson saw something pretty interesting this last Sunday. Bart Simpson, bratty son of Homer Simpson, got into esports! Specifically, he got so good he managed to be in competitions (along with some other recurring characters).

Bart gets a new computer and finds himself hooked to the game “Conflict of Enemies”, a title based on League of Legends. He eventually makes it all the way to a world championship of the game and travels all the way to Seoul! Naturally, Homer is mostly interested because he found out that high-paid players can make millions. Naturally, things aren’t going to go quite so smoothly, but that’s enough on the spoilers if you haven’t seen it!

Stadia is about the future of YouTube, not gaming

Stadia is about the future of YouTube, not gaming

Yesterday, Google announced plans for a new game-streaming service called Stadia. Besides the logo, the controller, and a single game — Doom Eternal — the announcement left us with more questions than answers. Primary in my mind has been the query of why Google needs to be in the gaming business at all. Isn’t it enough to dominate web search, ads, and browsers, smartphone operating systems, and maps? What part of our lives does Google not want to know about? And then it dawned on me that we might be looking at it from the wrong perspective: what if Stadia isn’t a case of Google aggressively entering a new business sphere, but rather a defensive one to protect its existing kingdom?

Gamer.LK launches Sri Lanka’s first dedicated Esports Studio

Gamer.LK, Sri Lanka’s Esports and Competitive Video Game organisation launched the first dedicated Esports Studio in the country. Gamer.LK has been promoting Esports since 2007, which is now considered the fastest growing sport in Sri Lanka. Gamer.LK organises the largest Esports, PC and Mobile Gaming events in the country, and the launch of the Esports Studio marks Gamer.LK’s expansion into video content creation catering to an estimated 3,000,000 video game enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.

With the new Studio, Gamer.LK will be conducting daily live streams featuring Sri Lanka’s top Esports athletes as well as original video programming. This content will be watchable online on facebook, Youtube, twitch.tv and Mixer to a 18-35 millennial age demographic that is increasingly shifting their video consumption to online platforms and away from television.

Sri Lanka has a large population of video game enthusiasts and we will be filling a void in dedicated video gaming and Esports video content targeted to the local market with our Esports Studio. Sri Lankan millennials are no longer watching television, and we expect our online channels to be their go-to source for content that they’re passionate about.” said Raveen Wijayatilake, CEO of Gamer.LK.

In the coming months, Gamer.LK plans to ramp up their video content efforts to run 24/7 video programming for this audience, and has built a passionate Esports content team in order to reach this goal.

Gamer.LK recently completed their first round of funding with Bluestone Capital, a venture capital firm lead by Ajit Gunewardene, former deputy-chairman of John Keells Holdings.

PlayBrain CEO Mike Sheetal says Japan’s esports industry is in “opportunity period”

PlayBrain CEO Mike Sheetal says Japan’s esports industry is in “opportunity period”

Japan has been a pillar of the broader videogames industry for decades. Companies like Sony and Nintendo have been pivotal parts of the growth of gaming since the early days. When it comes to esports, however, Japan has been more follower than innovator. Restrictive gambling and advertising laws prevented organizers and developers from supporting tournaments with large prize pools.

In the last year, however, some of those restrictions have been loosened, opening the door for companies to more actively grow Japan’s esports industry. The Esports Observer spoke to the CEO of one such company, PlayBrain’s Mike Sheetal, about one of Japan’s major esports growth opportunities: broadcast technology.

Battlefield V’ 64-player battle royale arrives March 25th

After months of waiting, Battlefield V‘s long-promised (but conspicuously absent) battle royale mode is nearly here. DICE and EA plan to make Firestorm available on March 25th to all players, and they’ve shed more light on what the mode will involve in a reveal trailer (below). The 64-player experience will take place on the largest Battlefield map to date, Halvoy, and will grant access to some rather unusual advantages if you complete objectives. Apparently, a farm tractor carrying artillery is one of your options. You can also expect helicopters, tanks and one-time perks like V-1 strikes.

As shown in a leaked clip, Firestorm still embodies most of the familiar traits of battle royale games. Once you’ve dropped into the map, you have to scrounge for gear (sorted by different quality levels) and fend off enemies as you’re pushed closer and closer together by the namesake Firestorm. You still have the chance of being revived like in most titles, although you’ll get a Battlefield-style sidearm to fend off people while you’re down.

Call of Duty Franchises to go for USD $25 Million

Call of Duty Franchises to go for USD $25 Million

One month ago during a fourth-quarter earnings call, Activision confirmed that a city-based franchising model would come to Call of Duty Esports next year. New information has now surfaced on just how much the franchise buy-in will cost organizations.

Sources told ESPN staff writer Jacob Wolf that Activision Blizzard has begun shopping next year’s Call of Duty franchise spots at $25 million per team. According to Wolf, this past week’s negotiations between Activision and prospective buyers are heating up. Wolf states that Activision “has asked potential buyers for a non-binding indication of interest within the next 14 days.”
