Angelo Mathews joins Gamer.LK’s SINGER Esports Premier League

Former Sri Lanka Cricket captain and T20 World Cup winning legend Angelo Mathews joins Gamer.LK’s Singer Esports Premier League as the mentor for the Western Warriors. The Western Warriors is a franchise Esports team that competes in the annual league. Sri Lanka’s top Esports athletes compete for a prize pool of Rs. 1 million in the mobile game “PUBG Mobile”, which is played by over a million Sri Lankan youth today.

Mathews is one of 6 Cricketing legends to have announced their affiliation with Gamer.LK’s league, with the others being Russel Arnold, Chaminda Vaas, Sanath Jayasuriya, Lasith Malinga and T M Dilshan. The mentors will be inspiring and guiding the Esports athletes who get recruited to the team, and shining a spotlight on the players and the league as a whole.

“Angelo brings a wealth of experience to the league with his decades-long international Cricket career and we welcome him with open arms as he mentors the young Esports athletes from the Western Warriors” said Raveen Wijayatilake, CEO of Gamer.LK and the founder President of the Sri Lanka Esports Association.

Esports has been growing at a rapid pace in Sri Lanka over the last decade thanks to Gamer.LK’s consistent efforts in organising tournaments and activities around the sport. There are an estimated 4 million gamers in the country. Esports was recognised by the Sports Ministry of Sri Lanka as the 70th national sport in 2019.

Over 2,000 Esports athletes are expected to compete for a spot in the 12 franchise teams. The event will be held completely online throughout August, September and October of this year. Gamers wanting to take part in qualifiers are able to get more information on the official website at epl.lk.

The Sabaragamuwa Knights is a franchise Esports team that competes in the annual league. Sri Lanka’s top Esports athletes compete for a prize pool of Rs. 1 million in the mobile game “PUBG Mobile”, which is played by over a million Sri Lankan youth today.

UOM bags Gamer.LK’s 7th Annual Inter-University Esports Championship powered by Softlogic & the Dell Gaming Academy

  • University of Moratuwa takes home 1st place at IUEC 2021
  • 2nd and 3rd place finishes go to NSBM and IIT respectively
  • Over 1,100 registered participants from 80 universities
  • 170+ matches played across 16 different game titles

The 7th annual Inter-University Esports Championship (IUEC) by Gamer.LK and powered by Softlogic & the Dell Gaming Academy, concluded last month (July 2021) after some intense university-level Esports action. IUEC 2021 brought in more players than last year with over 1,100 registered participants from across 80 different universities and higher education institutions. This is the 2nd year that IUEC was held online fully due to the pandemic situation, but managed to nearly double its registered player numbers. This year’s IUEC also consisted of 170+ matches, which were played across 16 game titles spanning PC, console and mobile.

From all the universities which participated, only 1 was able to take home the title of IUEC ‘21 Champions – the University of Moratuwa. UOM managed to earn 5 medals (3 gold, 2 silver) throughout the entire competition, thanks to their lineup of amazing players. Sachin ‘SID’ Dematapitiya, won 2 gold medals for UOM in FIFA ‘21 and Real Cricket, while Team Mora Bot Killers took gold for MLBB. While Dilshan “JP.MONTY” Gihan and Kaumini “PIK4CHU” Gunasinghe brought home silver medals in Call of Duty Mobile and Mario Kart Tour respectively. The National School of Business Management (NSBM) took the 2nd place finish, with 1 silver medal shy of beating UOM, while the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) finished in 3rd.

On the 7th of August, the top PUBG Mobile squads in the country faced off against each other at the Metropolitan Mcentre Invitational. And gave everyone watching an opportunity to witness some intense PUBG Mobile unfold. The teams invited for the Invitational included the 16 top ranked, active PUBG Mobile squads in Sri Lanka. The teams faced off in a best of 6 to determine the winners and runners up, who were awarded Rs. 140,000 in gifts and prizes from Metropolitan Mcentre and SLT Mobitel.

Of the 16 squads participating, WG – NRC Esports, the #3 best PUBG Mobile squad in Sri Lanka were crowned the champions of the Metropolitan Mcentre Invitational. NRC Esports put on an impressive showcase of their skills, managing 2 victories back to back in the best of 6. They also received the most placement points, with 57 points, due to their ability to stay in the top 5 continuously, except in match 2 where they placed 7th. NRC Esports also acquired the most number of kills throughout the event with 56 kills – 22 more than the runners up, nA – ISSL.
