American Esports organisation LowKey Esports enters Sri Lanka

LowKey Esports, an Esports organisation established in January 2019 has recruited 5 Esports athletes from Sri Lanka and will be playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive professionally under the LowKey Esports banner.

LowKey Esports is a multi-platform and multi-title organisation with teams in the USA, Brazil Philippines and Vietnam. LowKey League of Legends team is currently taking part in the Vietnam Championship Series and their Overwatch team will be taking part in the Overwatch Contenders.

Director of Esports at LowKey Max Wood had this to say about their entry into Sri Lanka.

We’ve reached out to Max Wood and waiting for the response from him

We spoke to team captain Omal ‘ROACH’ Prabuddha about their recruitment.

We are excited to be a part of lowkey esports where we get the necessary resources to become a professional gamer. I’m very happy that our talent got the recognition it needed to move forward as a professional from now onwards. Quite motivated to move forward under Lowkey banner and to represent them in local/international events. Lowkey created a path for us to be able to achieve our dreams. It’s a dream come true to be able to play full-time CS:GO in Sri Lanka. This is the first step towards the path of being a successful gamer within the country.

Esports is now a nationally recognised sport in Sri Lanka thanks to the efforts of Gamer.LK and the Sri Lanka Esports Association. With this foundation, Esports investment into the country is expected to increase in the coming years.

The event, held primarily online, will separate competing teams into Challenger and Pro leagues, with the top 6 ranked teams in the country getting a direct invite into the Pro league, and the top 2 teams from Challenger league making their way to the Pro league.

Historically, DOTA 2 has seen larger participation numbers than League of Legends across the board. Is 2019 the year that League of Legends overtakes DOTA 2? We can find out with GCDL being just around the corner.
