In 2020, the Championship first moved to a completely online setting and has continued online ever since and the results showed a significant increase in the popularity of Esports throughout the country on a varsity level.

With Sri Lanka on lockdown and physical events canceled, Esports is stronger than ever owing to its remote accessibility. Esports has already seen a surge in involvement and interest in Sri Lanka, in line with the social distance required to negate COVID-19’s spread, which explains why the growth was so exponential in a year where nothing else happened in a competitive or physical game-related environment.

The Inter-University Esports Championship set a new benchmark for university-level sporting events in Sri Lanka each year and last year had 50+ universities taking part and over 1100 participants registered for the event. This was a trending topic for the period of game week as the cumulative social media reach for the coverage of the event reached about 2.1 million. These are statistics that could stand toe-to-toe with sports like cricket and rugby, which are historically popular sports in the country. It also shows a growing interest that is in line with the global attitude towards gaming and its consideration as a sport.

This year’s Championship is powered by SLT-MOBITEL, the National ICT Solutions Provider who comes onboard as the title partner. SLT-MOBITEL has been at the forefront of empowering digital entertainment and Esports in Sri Lanka with product offerings catering to gamers in the country.

ViewSonic Gaming is the Official Gaming Monitor of this year’s Championship. One of these 4 teams could (probably) win the grand finals at Dialog-SLESA Free Fire Championship ’22

The finals for the district-level Free Fire tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Esports Association is happening on the 10th and 11th of September and many of the top Free Fire players in the country are gunning for the staggering prize pool of Rs. 1 million that’s up for grabs.

Here’s our predictions on who’s going to win:

4. Me-S – BROTHERHOOD

BROTHERHOOD has been struggling through the district qualifier semis and finals but thanks to the help of their ace player BOH xDream, they’ve made it to the finals. Do you think he and his team have what it takes to become champions? This team has the highest team kill eliminations in the championship to date, with 250 elims to their name, making them the most aggressive team in the championship which is not necessarily a good thing…
3. nA – ARCHANGELS A

This team representing Batticaloa has been steam rolling through the district qualifiers, semis and now they’re here at the finals. With the most number of Booyahs (10), they’re been riding on that winning momentum all the way into the finals. What’s strange is they’re about a 100 eliminations less than BROTHERHOOD, which makes you think, are they really doing the hard work to secure the win? Or are they just getting lucky with easy competition?

2. Ae-S – SLR GHOST

Everybody loves an underdog story and these guys are the true epitome of a dark horse. They have the second best star performer of the Championship in their team, “OhhmyJosh!!”. He is considered one of the best snipers in the South Asian region and has had breakthrough performances in both the district qualifiers finals and Day 2 of the semi finals, securing a place for his team in the grand finale with 20+ eliminations in both games. The team has a solid and balanced approach but they’ve struggled on the road to the finals. Perhaps that’s what would make the winning so much more satisfying if they get through this final hurdle.

1. nA – NEGU SL

Ranked #1 in SLESA’s national rankings, second most team eliminations in the Championship (227) and securing the most points in the tournament so far (422), these guys know what they’re doing. xShanYT and xDemon are considered as two of the top 5 players of this Championship and together they have racked up about 126 eliminations, which is higher than some teams’ totals. Stats-wise, experience-wise, skills-wise they seem to have it all which is why they are our no. 1 prediction to win the grand finale.
