No Game Zone / The Cybersecurity / AntiVirus Thread / Poll
« on: August 24, 2017, 10:24:57 am »
Maybe I'm a little overcautious but I thought we could stimulate a little discussion on the subject?

I've used AVG, ESET (8 years) and over the last year McAfee (got it from a cybersecurity specialist and it's by Intel y'know...they make my processor so they *must* be good right? ;)) The downside is that it is a bit tricky to get used to (although the UX is getting better) and more importantly it tends to quarantine files that one would have to manually add exceptions and even then I'm not sure that works. And obviously, it costs (although you do get to add unlimited device protection to your account & a lot of control, so most likely I'll renew my licence).

I'm also trialing Dr Web on one machine as a recommendation - so far so good.

I find Kaspersky to be consistently highly rated amoungst web reviewers, and I see a fair few GLKers use Avast.

  • Also, I'm guessing most use the free versions?
  • Is past performance an indicator of the future as threats get more and more advanced?
  • What do you think the risk is with using local eTailers / banks? From what I gather many companies in SL see cybersecurity as a low priority issue, but experiences may differ
  • Do you think the average user takes enough care in clicking on dodgy links or responding to phishing emails / messages? Given that some of these messages are very cleverly worded, is it even possible without having a solid command of the language the message is written in?
  • How do you store the scores of passwords & logins that we need?
  • In terms of privacy, what happens if your phone or computer dies on you and you give it in for repairs? I would trust the chaps at RL, but I'm not sure I'd trust anyone else not to dig in to my data (and I'm not talking about submitting dodgy photos of my hairy legs to fetish sites ;))
  • Backing up data - not so much of an issue for the average user but for any small or greater company that can't upload everything to the web, do they keep offline backups?

There's a heap to talk about, I'm guessing there are enough users on GLK still active to turn this into some sort of useful discussion!

Communal Assistance / eBay Sellers who ship to SL...
« on: May 30, 2017, 05:39:01 pm »
Sooo I'm looking to order a whole bunch of things, mostly computer or photography-related stuff under US$ 50 & will be paying via PayPal but spending ages finding sellers that will ship to SL in under a month.

Does anyone have any preferred sellers they use? Is the eBay shipping estimate to SL generally accurate in your experience or does one need to proceed further with the order?

Spank you!

Communal Assistance / DyingLight steam_api64.dll issue
« on: May 27, 2017, 09:16:55 am »
So I was merrily playing Dying Light (The Following) when I had a bit of a random power surge (despite UPS & good wiring - but that's another topic) and the computer restarted.

Everything works fine - except that when trying to start DL (even with admin rights) the following error message appears:

the code execution cannot proceed because steam_api64.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program might solve this problem

I'd rather not reinstall just yet - will downloading the DLL file & replacing it work or render the whole thing bunk?
This is one game that was acquired by means other than steam so Googling hasn't been of much help ;)

Communal Assistance / 32inch TV Options on a budget?
« on: April 21, 2017, 12:33:31 pm »
Hi guys! So I need to get a TV for a room & don't want to spend more than 30k really - I'm just wondering what my best bang for the buck might be?

This would be used for Blu-Ray movie playback, viewing distance is about 4-6 feet away.

Most of the monitors in this price range are 1366 x 768p.

I've looked at most major online stores - any recommendations for shops that might stock a Full HD TV are welcome...I've already checked Dinapala, Siedles, online retailers & Arpico without much luck...

I'd prefer to stick to a well known brand, unless the ones like HiSense & Atom amount to pretty much the same at this price band...

Spanks You!

Hardware / Peripherals / New i5 6500 Build - Thoughts?
« on: January 21, 2017, 03:45:34 pm »
Hi All!

So I'm planning to purchase (from Nanotek) & assemble the following:

CPU i5-6500  (6M Cache, up to 3.60 GHz) (6th GEN)   31,000.00

EDIT Looks like RL has an MSI B150M PRO-VD - 11,000 that has both USB 3.1 & 6 SATA ports!

Gigabyte B250-HD3 16,000 (Not in stock yet -no idea when it'll arrive)
MSI B150M Motar 14,500   (In stock)
RAM: Kingston DDR4 2133Mhz 8GB   9,000
OS Disc: Patriot Spark 128GB   8,000.00
PSU: Corsair VS Series™ VS450 450W 85% efficiency 7,500
CASING: CM StormTrooper - Used Price 10,000

Item: The MotherBoard has to have USB 3.1 & 6 SATA Ports. Both these do but the B250 has 6 USB 3.1 ports. The B150 Motar is in stock. I can wait a week, but if that turns into 2 weeks then I'm wasting time.

Item: I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 12 or 16 GB in a couple of months.

Item: I'm going with this case because I need something that case hold at least 6 3.5inch HDDs. This seems to be the only thing available within my budget.

I'll be using this for Photoshop & Lightroom work.
I have the peripherals & GPU.

Any thoughts? :)

Hardware / Peripherals / Building Basic PC that can take 5 or more HDDs
« on: December 21, 2016, 12:30:47 pm »
Hi guys,

I've shopped around but would love your input on how I could obtain the most value for money parts & what kind of pricing I'd be looking at for the following machine:

Case: Must have adequate cooling & crucially enough space for 1x SSD + min 5 3.5inch HDDs
Motherboard: Must support USB 3.0 & have at least 6 x Sata 6.0Gb/s (one for the OS SSD, the others for the data drives). I could buy an expansion card but that cost me about 4500 from Amazon via Kapruka & I'd have to wait 3 weeks :p
Processor: i3 or used i5 would do I suppose?
SSD: Team Evo? 7500/-
PSU: I'm clueless with PSU's - would a 450w do?
VGA: Not required
Optical Drive: Not required
Peripherals: Got em.

Variable: I could always put 3 x 4TB drives so I'd need only 4 SATA 6.0s channels but how reliable are 4TB drives in the local market?

I basically want this machine to store a bunch of our backup harddisks.
I will back the data on this machine up periodically from my main computer.
I'm more interested in a standalone machine than NAS. (I won't bore you with why just yet!)

Muchas gracias in advance!

Hardware / Peripherals / Repair Printer or Buy New?
« on: December 13, 2016, 12:21:19 pm »
Hi guys, I inherited an HP Deskject 1000 J111a that currently fails to print most color or b&w documents.
I've run all the disagnostic tests and even replaced the cartridges but no luck.

So does anyone know where I could get this thing looked at & repaired?

Or should I give it away and buy a new one?

My needs: Basic color & black and white printing, maybe a few color photos once in a while but for reference more than for their photographic print quality.
Budget: upto 10k if required but I'm only looking at about a dozen pages a month so I don't want to spend it unless there's some significant gain (like offsetting the cost of cartridges in the long run).

Thank You in Advance chaps!

Hardware / Peripherals / ''Upgrading'' From ASUS 970 to...
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:39:21 pm »
Hi Guys!

So I have the following:

1 x Asus Strix GTX 970
1 x Shimian 1440 resolution monitor (Primary - used for gaming) o.0
1 x ViewSonic 1080p monitor

4790k CPU
Asus Z97 M+ MB

I don't game often but when I do I want my games to look as pretty (I'm superficial like that) and I'm fine with 50-60fps (I average about 60 in Dying Light).

My Question: Should I sell my GTX 970 (the warranty ends in Feb 2017) & if so my options are the 480 Nitro+ or the GTX 1060...

I can put upto 30k if I sell my 970 for 30k so 60K total budget.

The 1070 is just too much of a stretch for me right now.

Muchas Gracias in advance!

Hardware / Peripherals / Upgrading from i5-2300 to i7 2600 CPU?
« on: August 05, 2016, 11:10:49 am »
Hi guys - so I have a machine with an i5-2300 @ 2.80GHz  CPU that has served me well but I think it could do with an upgrade speedwise given that we use CPU intensive programs like Lightroom.

There's a chap selling i7 2600 CPU's with a months warranty at 17.5k - do you guys think that's worth the upgrade?
Perhaps I could recover a wee bit of the cash selling the i5 on?

I don't really want to spend much more than that & a newer processor means updating the motherboard too and it's not something I'm in a rush to do given that this comp works quite well for given tasks at the moment.

Overall specs:

MB: KCH7710H Intel Board
Storage: 1SSD + 5 HDDs
OS: Win 10
VGA: AMD 7750

We don't game on this!
Spank you in advance :D

Hardware / Peripherals / Advice on Buying a New Laptop
« on: January 31, 2016, 08:52:36 pm »
Hi guys  :bye:

SO I've got an HP G4 Pavillion (i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) which I'm thinking of selling so I can put some cash towards buying a newer notebook based on the fact that I will be a) travelling with it b) using Lightroom with it for light edits. This laptop is not my main comp by any means - I just want it to be as good as possible for the price given the following:

- BUDGET: IF I sell the G4, I can go upto around Rs 120,000/-
- i7 or i5 processor (i7 is preferable)
- 8GB ram (ideally included in the above budget)
-VGA card  - dont care - wont be gaming.
-HDD - Above 500GB or even an 240SSD is fine
- WEIGHT - My HP works fine - I want to  ideally upgrade to something a bit lighter IF possible as I'll be travelling overseas a lot. Eg: I would rather buy a reasonably good i5 laptop that weighs less than a faster i7 for instance. Under 2KG would be ideal but I see that's tough at this price point.
-Screen - Don't care - critical edits aren't performed on it.
-USB 3.0 - Two ports ideally but if only one then ok.
- Brand: I'm good with HP, ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, LENOVO but will look at others if recommended
- OS: Would be great if it came with legit Win 7 / 8 or 10.

So far this entices me: but I've been looking through the sheets at Redline too...

Thoughts? Spanks in advance!
