[SLCG] Delays in schedule and failing PCs - an explanation
« on: October 06, 2010, 03:40:52 pm »
Firstly we would like to sincerely apologize to all participating teams who had to sit through the epic delays and problems with the schedule that we experienced during the three days of SLCG '10. We do understand that some of you cut classes, and some of you just spent your valuable time waiting for your match to be called up - we are sorry we made you wait.

We owe you an explanation as to why this happened, and what steps we are taking to make sure such issues do not crop up in future Gamer.LK events.

The schedule
The schedule was put together assuming we had 30 working computers. In fact, we DID have 30 working computers on the first day of SLCG '10. If all 30 computers performed with no issues during the three days of the event, there would be no issues with delays or re-schedules. There are some participants who are of the assumption that we made a bad schedule, and then couldn't back it up in the end - this is not true. The main culprit were the failing PC's, which is my next point.

The computers
A number of factors led to the failure of certain computers at different moments during the three days of the event. Starting on the first day itself - the electricians we hired (Aloka Electricals, who were also handling Infotel power) gave us a faulty left power grid, which resulted in the loss of power to an entire 10 computers. This led to the corruption of VGA drivers on a few of the PC's that had Counterstrike matches scheduled on them. With no VGA drivers, Counterstrike would not successfully run, and therefore we had to wait till the 200mb+ driver was downloaded and installed to resume CS matches. This left the entire 10 PC's unusable for CS for the entire first day.

Secondly, the remaining 10 PC's (Ground Zero PC's) which provide a constant 100fps were reduced to a laggy and virus induced state due to one reason and one reason only - participants USB pens. To those who complained to us saying we provided "noob PC's", we infact provided 100fps PCs for the tournament. These 100fps machines were then ruined by the viruses carried in your USB pens. It's absolute common sense that you don't plug your virus infected USB pen into another persons computer, LET ALONE tournament PC's at an event like SLCG '10.

Game priority
There have been accusations that we gave priority to Call of Duty 4. This is not true. The initial plan in the schedule was to switch between COD4, CS and DOTA on the stage, just like we did in 2009. However, after the first day where the 10 PCs were unable to be used, we were left with no choice but to continue all matches in its own section with no switches being made. This was a scheduling decision and had nothing to do with giving priority to different games.

What we've learnt
In future tournaments, we will be strictly banning all USB pens / USB mobile phones etc and anyone caught plugging in a USB pen into tournament PC's will be disqualified without warning. This is because the only thing certain participants do is sabotage tournament PC's with their virus infected USB pens/mobile phones and then make posts on Gamer.LK about how the tournament and organisers suck. This will not be tolerated any longer.

Invest in a higher number of PC's, which will allow for easier scheduling and more time for delays.

We hope this makes it a little clearer as to how our decision making process works, and also the trouble we had to deal with when it came to scheduling and getting the matches played. We also hope those who say "bad organising" etc can now see it's not that simple, and considering the problems we faced, we did our best.

Regards,
SLCG '10 team

Just to clarify, does this mean that players are encouraged (and expected) to bring driverless keyboards, mice and headsets since there is no way to install drivers?

What ever installations, configs required, MUST be submitted prior to the event. In organizers point of view it is very frustrating to go through these unwanted problems cause of one careless selfish person.

It is quite normal to expect delays and PC problems. But I thought that having organized SLCG many times before that U might have allocated some small number of extra PCs just to accommodate these kind of situations.

What you guys have done wrong is to assume that you have 30 working PCs and made the schedule for that. It's sad to see that many things have gone wrong and some things are outta your hands, like the power problems. oh well, just take a lesson from this and make sure u don't repeat it in the next.

Nice to see Sri Lanka's gaming scene going forward....

Best of Luck.
