PC keeps rebooting while gaming
« on: May 15, 2017, 02:18:21 pm »
My PC keeps rebooting during gaming, when system is idle it doesn't restart (Gpu- MSI R9 290). Ran a stress test on Kombuster for 30 mins, temps hit 94 c but didn't crash. When playing R6 Siege after ~30 mins PC suddenly reboots and it is then followed by constant reboots every 10 mins. Temps in siege maxes out at ~80 c.

Thanks in advance.

Did you check your CPU temps? It can be that the CPU is overheating given that your GPU also reaches 94C during kombustor. Download the Aida64 trial and stress test your CPU for 20mins. Use a software like HWmonitor to measure CPU temps while running the stress test. If CPU overheating is not the case it could be a PSU issue as well.

Yes, I did check CPU temps, max temps during gaming was like 60c. Nevertheless, I'll do the Aida test and report back. Thnx.

It seems that your CPU is overheating. Check the CPU Fan to see if it's working fine. and try reapplying thermal paste.

PS: Do you get any error codes before restarting? bluescreen maybe?

I just reapplied the thermal paste when I installed the CM 212x few days back. The rebooting issue started before installing the cooler.

I once had a problem like this. But I got a blue screen with the error message saying that there was RAM problem(BAD_Location or sector MEMORY something). I cleaned the ram with degreaser and installed it on a different slot. It's working fine now.

Your CPU temps seem fine. Does the reboots only happen when gaming?

Yea.
Then the major suspect is the PSU, unlike most synthetic stress tests games stress all/most of a computers components at once meaning you will see a very large power draw. The fact that the issue was not there when you stressed the GPU and CPU seperately would give strong evidence that there's nothing wrong with your GPU nor CPU.  I would suggest running Kombustor and Aida64 together and see if system reboots. Make sure you untick the stress GPU option before starting the aida64 stress test.

That did it.  :) After running both Aida and Kombustor together, system rebooted within 5 minutes. So it's the PSU I guess... ?

Yep, now I'm pretty sure that it's the PSU. For some reason your PSU can't handle the power draw your system requires when gaming, but 650W should be enough considering your specs so the chances are your PSU is faulty. Hope you have warranty left for it.
Just for some final clarification, did you measure CPU and GPU temps while running both Kombustor and and Aida64 together? There is a slight chance that your casing has a bad airflow problem when both of them are working together but this is highly unlikely.

The temps were pretty much the same as before. PSU should still be under warranty. Thanks a lot for the help Knight!  :)
