The trip around the country to bring together the best of Sri Lanka’s cyber-athletes finally reached the main showdown in Colombo. Sri Lanka Cyber Games ’16 organized by Gamer.LK for the 9th consecutive year was held from 9th to 11th December at the BMICH. With the sponsorship of Dialog Gaming, the venue opened its doors to the biggest gaming event of the year once again calling in thousands of participants and enthusiasts to one great hall.
Dialog who brings fast, low latency connections for gamers in Sri Lanka stepped into power SLCG and Colombo Comic Con for the fourth consecutive year. Dialog has also invested in hosting cloud gaming servers in partnership with Gamer.LK to reduce latency and develop the multiplayer online eco system.
Creamoo Drinking Yoghurt was the Nutritional Partner for the event with Hacks partnering up to be the Coolness Partner for the second consecutive year. Honda was the Motorbike Partner. MAS was the Silver Sponsor whilst Majestic Cineplex signed on as the Cinema Partner for the event. The event also welcomed the partnership of Red Bull, the world’s most popular energy drink as the Energy Drink Partner. YES FM, a dominant force in the radio industry for over 2 decades was the Radio Partner while Readme (Online Media Partner), Pulse.LK (Lifestyle Partner), Pyxle (Digital Agency) and Valve (Tournament License Partner) supported the event.
With promises to bring out the best of gaming action for another year, SLCG hosted 10 official titles and more competitive games for everyone to take part in and emerge victorious. To add up to the glory, an overall championship trophy for the clan with the best performance was up for grabs for the first time ever! With that goal in mind, the professional gamers of Sri Lanka played very passionately to become the best and to take the pride of making their clan the best in the country.
The following games were played at SLCG ’16:
Ranked Team Games
DOTA 2
League of Legends
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Counter-Strike Global Offensive
Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
Ranked Individual Games
Mortal Kombat XL
FIFA 16
Project Cars
Other Games
Overwatch
Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Women's League
The atmosphere was filled with various vibes, literally. The proud representatives of Sri Lanka’s leading clans filled the venue confidently wearing their clan jerseys. It was no longer limited to five main clans as the newly rising clans such as WolfGang eSports, Inferno Immortal Gamers, and Animus eSports also made sure to make their names stand out not just through physical presence but also through performance.
This year called for many changes in terms of titles. The two most favored racing games: Need for Speed Most Wanted and TrackMania Nations Forever were replaced by the new realistic racing simulator, Project Cars. Another major difference was the removal of the two console titles: Tekken and HALO and replacing them with Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. Even though Tekken was not an official title, the demand still made it happen as an unofficial title. While all the classics and popular eSports took most of the attention, there was a large crowd eagerly waiting to see some new action in the newly introduced promotional title, Overwatch.
The change of titles or the change of faces did not step in the way of seeing what a majority came to see. The intense rivalries that were waiting to be settled still made sure to take place on the grandest stage of the year just as they were expected. One of the main sights of this year was the return of a Phoenix GaminG vs Maximum eSports rivalry making it to the finals of FIFA 16. Another was the undefeated DOTA champions, The Kade once again facing up against their newly reformed rivals, Division 9.
While the rivalries kept the audience in-tense, Team Phoenix had a reputation of their own to maintain as being undefeated. Xiphos eSports also had a reputation of being very prominent in Mortal Kombat XL and Project Cars throughout the year. They were looking to ace those titles despite whatever the competition they had.
The new hype of Overwatch continued to generate great cheers. New teams faced-off against each other in a completely new environment making super-fast-paced plays that made the audience bite their nails in excitement. Team PressQFTW representing Xiphos eSports along with a member of Maximum eSports was a prominent contender in the draw and they once again managed to take the victory of the newly introduced title.
The big titles took the attention as expected. However, there were more exciting games that came with bigger prizes, literally. Honda who was a partner of SLCG hosted a massive contest for everyone to take part in a mobile game called Rider Rush. The winner did not get to walk back home, instead he was gifted with an actual Honda motorbike to ride away! Dialog also had a similar contest with the mobile game, Fight Rush. The player with the highest score at the end of the three days was awarded a PlayStation 4 console! Excitement and engagement was at its max. Whoever came to see the event had enough activities to get involved with. There was even a session of Ingress for everyone to try out.
Three days of intense eSports action came to an end. The following gamers stood strong against all challenges and emerged as the best of the country in their respective games:

In a close confrontation, the first ever Overall SLCG Championship given to the clan that performs the best was awarded to Phoenix GaminG who managed to secure 5 gold and 3 silver medals in the official titles. Despite being strongly contested by Xiphos eSport, Phoenix GaminG once again made sure to make it a red-shed year by winning both the Overall Championship and the Best Clan of the Year award.
With that, the 9th edition of Sri Lanka Cyber Games concluded brings forward the standards of local eSports even higher. Gamer.LK congratulates Phoenix GaminG and all the winners and participants for their efforts. Looking forward to bring even greater action, we wish all gamers a merry intense holiday season filled with lots of kills and play of the games!
