Tech Morph turns 7
« on: September 20, 2016, 10:40:48 pm »
Tech Morph is a veteran in the Sri Lankan gaming community with roots dating back to 2009. With the philosophy of promoting good gaming conduct, and encouraging unity between gamers from different genres, Tech Morph united under the common goal of ‘brotherhood’.  Tech Morph established their fortes by winning the SLeSA Best Clan of the Year in 2013, and also Most Popular Clan at the first SLT eSports Championship. Talking to us is Isuru ‘Viper’ Herath about the origins, the journey, and all things of Tech Morph.

  • What was the origin story of Tech Morph?
At the beginning we were known as ‘The Agents’ and after few months, it was dissolved due to several reasons. Rico ‘Boti’ Kurera and Kavinda ‘President’ Karunanayaka then had the idea to form a new clan with a new identity. They sat down in front of Presi’s house and discussed what went wrong in ‘The Agents’ and wanted the new clan to be better in every way. Discussions were carried out regarding the structure of the clan, vision, mission and also a recruiting process was introduced which we still carry out. Thanks to Charaka ‘Hawkeye’ Herath and his brother Buddhi ‘Longbow’ Herath, the name ‘Tech Morph’ came up and Tech Morph was formed in 1st September 2009.

It was also decided that ’Tech Morph’ to be always controlled by 03 admins: i.e. if one admin is wrong the other two admins can always point it out. So Sanjaya ‘Fallen’ Elvitigala was promoted as the third admin. Now a days they are known as the 03 founders of the clan and currently we have a few more admins to carry out administrative work, finance, strategy, marketing and above all, gaming.

So basically this is the beginning of Tech Morph in a nutshell. From the humble beginnings with handful members to become the clan with back to back SLCG major title winners and highest number of active members in the country.

  • What’s the core ambition of Tech Morph?
I hope this answer would make sense: “Welcome to the Brotherhood! It’s not just about gaming!”

As our slogan suggests, our core ambition is to create a “Brotherhood” connecting gamers, giving them an identity and the feeling of belonging to a family where you will always feel home. Gamers come from many backgrounds and have their own unique story. Tech Morph welcomes all without any judgement as long as everyone comprehends the meaning of brotherhood where everyone treats all equally and as family. That being said, we pave way for the new-comers to engage in competitive gaming by sharing our experiences and guidance.

  • From the beginning to 7 years later, what major changes have you seen in the clan?
Well, there have been four generations taking over the leadership and guiding TM. Each leader has added something to the clan and guided the clan where it is right now! Their mutual understanding and the bond they have with all the clan members has helped to game up and bring glory to TM. There was a time when we were a clan with strict rules but what we have realised is that we are not a business but a community where guys and girls from all parts of the country join to play and have fun. Admins are there to provide any kind of help that clan members will require and focus their random scrim victories towards achieving something more higher like a LAN win. So unlike before, we give priority to create space for members to have their fun and make it a free environment for all gamers without any differentiation of ethnicity, gender or religion.

  • What are some of the memorable incidents of TM?
Definitely it will be the year 2011 and 2012, when TM won all 3 major gaming titles back to back in SLCGs; Outlaws winning the COD4 title, xZtint winning the CS title and Death Sentence winning the DotA title. Knight’s and Shaza’s NFS victories in SLCGs are also not to be forgotten.

And of course winning the very first SLeSA Best clan of the year in 2013 and the Most Popular Clan award at the inaugural SLT e-Sports Championship are memorable days in our timeline.

Apart from gaming, all our anniversary celebrations at various locations and countless memories at LANs and after parties ;) will never be forgotten. People come to TeamSpeak to escape from the reality and be with their gaming kin each day and these experiences regardless of good or bad, are always be part of Tech Morph’s legacy.

  • Which games do you mostly concentrate on?
Mainly the current major titles; COD4, CS:GO, DOTA2, League of Legends. Apart from that our players focus on individual titles such as NFS, FIFA, Mortal Kombat and Street fighter. We have guys playing games like GTA:SA Multiplayer, Overwatch and Command and Conquer as well, though they aren’t in local competitive scene.

  • How do the Tech Morph leaders motivate its members?
Well our leaders are a lot friendlier than any other clan leader that I can assure. They always back the members with what they know and helping and guiding them towards winning. The Leaders and all other senior members help each other to build a better understanding inside the clan so the corporation and coordination will be at highest. Members are free to contact any Admin regarding any issue, be it personal or gaming. Facebook group is the most active given amount of experiences members share in it.

  • What did it mean to win the first ever Best Clan Award by the Sri Lanka eSports Association back in 2013?
A lot. Definitely it’s one of the biggest achievements we have had in the path of gaming. Point being it was the very first ‘Best Clan’ award by SLeSA and it motivated us as a clan when we were at our lowest. Following SLCG we saw a huge number of young and new guys joining us (true, couldn’t win any titles) and these guys reminded us what it was like back in the day and where we lost being strong as a unit. Hopefully we can turn the tides this year with more team participation and title wins.

  • What do you think Sri Lankan eSports community need to improve on?
Corporation and specially the junior members of the community should take examples from the senior members about the harmony they had with other clans. Even though we play for different clans there were times when everyone got together to helped each other. This doesn’t mean things should not be serious all the time but it should have that unity and fun. We would love to see that again. Once we type in GGWP, all the hostility and rage that built up during the game should die with it, as (we always emphasise to our young guys) that at the end of the day, we are all gamers and we should be there for us all, regardless clan.

  • Any plans to extend the power of the clan into the international scene?
We are. But first we need to focus more on winning titles in the local gaming scene like we did before and then move forward to the international level.

  • Anything else you’d like to add?
Yes. To celebrate the 7th anniversary we have organised a get together and a paintball event which will definitely be another epic day out with our lads. Plus our website; was re-launched on the 16th of September with added colour.
We just received the news that Team iPwn have officially joined Tech Morph. Find out more here.
