No Game Zone / SLT IPTV
« on: September 28, 2008, 08:06:39 am »
From Wikipedia

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a digital television service is delivered using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which may include delivery by a broadband connection. A general definition of IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional broadcast and cable formats, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks.

For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with Internet services such as Web access and VoIP. The commercial bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is referred to as "Triple Play" service (adding mobility is called "Quadruple Play"). IPTV is typically supplied by a service provider using a closed network infrastructure. This closed network approach is in competition with the delivery of TV content over the public Internet, called Internet Television. In businesses, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs.

Sri Lanka Telecom (www.slt.lk) is one of the country’s most valuable companies with an annual turnover in excess of Rs 40 billion. The company was awarded an AAA (sri) rating by Fitch Ratings Lanka followed by a BB- international rating by Fitch International and Standard & Poor’s Rating Services.

SLT Group has a customer base of over two million including multinational corporations, large and small corporate, retail and domestic customers.  Today with NTT Communications of Japan as a strategic partner, SLT provides facilities and services: voice, data, video and mobile to its customers, which are unmatched in scope. These services range from domestic and international voice, advance data transmission services which include internet services on leased lines, broadband [on ADSL] and dial up, data circuits, frame relay solutions to IP services such as IP-VPN based on IP-MPLS technology, total corporate solutions of multiple services, satellite uplink services and mobile telephony through the fully owned subsidiary Mobitel.

With a view to making Sri Lanka a broadband island, SLT is in the process of introducing the necessary infrastructure in the form of NGN [Next Generation Networks] using optical fiber backbone and broadband services such as IMS [IP Multimedia Subsystem], IPTV [Internet Protocol Television] etc. SLT also provides high speed global connectivity to countries in the South Asian region through its investments in international submarine cables such as SMW3, SMW4 and the Bharat Lanka submarine cable [between India and Sri Lanka] and Dhirragu-SLT submarine cable system  between Maldives Islands and Sri Lanka.  Newly incorporate SLT Hong Kong Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of SLT, fully geared to provide services such as IP transit, IPVPN, IPLC and International voice traffic transit services to global telecom operators and corporates in Hong Kong.

To lead Sri Lanka to become the hub of telecommunications in South Asia.

    *  Simplicity
    * Fast and reliable service
    * Much faster than other solutions
    * Most cost effective
    * Internet connection is "always on"
    * Un-metered Internet access makes budgeting easier
    * Parallel use of phone & fax while using the Internet
    * No extra telephone charge, only a monthly renta

PTV is the delivery of digital TV services over a broadband network rather than other forms of digital broadcasting. The IP in IPTV simply refers to internet protocol, a networking technology that underpins the internet and is increasingly used for communication across data network in general. IPTV usually refers to TV services over a Network Operator’s quality controlled network.

The term, Internet TV is the delivery of IPTV over the public Internet, and not be confused with IPTV.

Video on Demand (VoD) is the delivery of video content over broadband IP networks to the individual viewer initiated by him/her at a time of him/her choice. Most commonly, it is streaming unicast service delivered to one user per stream.

In simple terms, SLT IPTV works by delivering broadcast TV and/or VoD to your TV through your existing SLT phone line. The Video Head End converts TV and VoD content in to IP packets (digital) and delivers it through SLT’s managed network infrastructure to the Set Top Box (STB) sitting on top of your TV. STB converts the digital signal back to analog and feeds to you TV. The STB also converts the remote control signals to IP commands and change the channels or content accordingly. Since the content rides on IP, you can have more interactive experience by watching what you want, when you want.

IP     - Internet protocol- to transport video from Service Provider’s(SP’s) video head end to STB.
DSL    - Digital Subscriber Line-The last mile technology used on the telephone wire.

- Moving Picture Experts Group- To encode/compress TV/Video to be transported overIP

- To transport TV channels through the SP network
Unicasting    - To transport VoD  through the SP network

Broadcast is the term used to describe communication where a piece of information is sent from one point to all other points. In this case there is just one sender, but the information is sent to all connected receivers.

Unicast is the term used to describe communication where a piece of information is sent from one point to another point. In this case there is just one sender, and one receiver.

Multicast is the term used to describe communication where a piece of information is sent from one or more points to a set of other points. In this case there may be one or more senders, and the information is distributed to a set of receivers (there may be no receivers, or any other number of receivers).

As a user you will require the following to have IPTV;

    * An ADSL connection (with or without Broadband Internet Access)
    * A TV
    * A STB

STB     - provided by SLT on installment basis
ADSL    - modem/router - provided by SLT on installment basis
TV    - not provided by SLT

IPTV/VoD is not only video but offers much more than traditional TV. IPTV/VoD can include the following service components:

    * TV service
    * VoD
    * Personal Video Recorder (PVR)
    * Network Personal Video Recorder (NPVR)
    * Electronic Program Guide (EPG)
    * Information Services
    * Interactive TV
    * Interactive Applications
    * Broadband Application

IPTV and VoD are delivered though SLT’s fully redundant IP core network and the equipments used are of high availability features. The network and the video head end is designed in a fully redundant manner, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and best Quality of Experience (QoE).

You will be having more power and choice in your hands with SLT IPTV. You can simply watch what you want, when you want.

You also can interact with the service (IPTV) and personalize the content the way you want. You will not be just watching the SLT IPTV but also directly interacting with it.

Wide variety of interactivity are available ahead that allows new TV viewing experience such as allowing you to search for content by title or actor’s name or to channel surf without leaving the program you are watching.

As an adult you may also want to know what you children are watching. With IPTV you have more control over the content.

Testing Centers

SLT is in the process of putting up and experience center to have a touch and feel of the IPTV service. The location will be announced soon.

You can test/experience the service before you buy.

No Game Zone / Microsoft's Midori -- a future without Windows
« on: September 05, 2008, 09:54:45 am »
                                               Microsoft's Midori

According to a report, Microsoft isn't just looking at the next version of Windows (no, not Mojave) for future OS possibilities, but is looking beyond the Windows architecture altogether with a project known as Midori. The new OS is still in the "incubation" phase (which puts it slightly closer to market than R&D projects), but Microsoft has admitted to its existence, and the Software Daily Times says at least one team in Redmond is actively working on the new architecture.

The basis for the platform centers around research related to Microsoft's Singularity project, and envisions a distributed environment where applications, documents, and connectivity are blurred in a cloud-computing phantasmagoria which can be run natively or hosted across multiple systems. The researchers are working to create a concurrent / parallel distribution of resources, as well as a method of handling applications across separate machines -- religiously-dubbed the Asynchronous Promise Architecture -- which will set the stage for a backwards-compatible operating system built from the ground up, with networks of varying size in mind. Says the SD Times, "The Midori documents foresee applications running across a multitude of topologies, ranging from client-server and multi-tier deployments to peer-to-peer at the edge, and in the cloud data center. Those topologies form a heterogeneous mesh where capabilities can exist at separate places." Like it technical? Hit the read link for an in-depth look at the possible shape of Microsoft's future.

Action/Adventure / John Woo Presents Stranglehold {Any one PLay This game?}
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:07:38 am »

Stranglehold (or John Woo Presents Stranglehold) is a third-person shooter developed by Midway Games (Chicago studio), for Windows, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. It is Midway's first game to use Unreal Engine 3, and was developed in collaboration with John Woo. The game has been in development at Midway Chicago since 2005 and was released for Xbox 360 on September 5th, 2007, released for PC on September 19th, 2007, and PlayStation 3 on October 29th, 2007.

Stranglehold is the sequel to director John Woo’s 1992 film, Hard Boiled, and stars Chow Yun Fat in a reprisal of his role as the hard boiled cop Inspector "Tequila" Yuen. Stranglehold is the first project on which Woo and Chow have collaborated since Hard Boiled.

In latter-day Hong Kong, a policeman goes missing. The department is dumbfounded by the disappearance until they receive a ransom call from an unnamed source. The kidnappers request that a single officer appear at Kowloon market. Tequila volunteers for the assignment against his superior's wish, beginning a sequence of battles with rival Triads and the Russian Mafia that extends from the street markets of Hong Kong to the museums of Chicago.[7]

Tequila finds the missing officer's badge with the picture of the officer dead. Tequila chases the kidnappers, which eventually lead him to Wong, the Triad boss of a group called Dragon Claw, who claims he was set up by Golden Kane. Tequila learns that his ex-wife, Billie—who is also Wong's daughter—and her daughter have been kidnapped by the Russian mob group, Zakarov. Tequila then heads to Chicago to rescue his family, leading to a shootout in a Chicago museum in which Tequila kills the Russian mob boss, Damon. Tequila finds Billie, and at the same time Tequila's undercover partner bursts in and opens fire on both of them, killing her. Tequila pursues him and manages to corner him. His undercover partner reveals that the Russian mafia was going to use Billie (through threatening her daughter) to remove the Triads from power by making her testify against Wong and that he was sent by Wong to kill her. Tequila kills him in an intense gunfight and heads back to Hong Kong, collaborating with Golden Kane to take down Dragon Claw by arranging an exchange in the slums of Kowloon as Golden Kane has Billie's daughter and would return her for "a slice of Hong Kong". The plan fails when Tequila did not make it at the arranged time and Wong's right hand man kills the leader of Golden Kane. Tequila chases Wong back to his estate and kills his second in command while his daughter kills Wong.
