Hardware / Peripherals / Re: Where can I buy compressed air
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:59:22 pm »
Just FYI for anyone looking at buying compressed air, I finally found that ODEL Alexandra Place has stocked a few cans of Dust Off at about 2k each. Tried it out and works wonders - my PC internals are squeaky clean in just 30 seconds.

yup.. it's the pc full site that's slow as hell. the app seems responsive now.

Thanx bro I will keep that in mind.

Any idea about the  B.Sc. (Hons) in Information Technology offered by the University of Moratuwa? I think I have enough Z to get into that. Is there a difference between that and a degree in software engineering?

You're welcome, mate. I'd say just take the degree from Uni of Moratuwa. You'll learn quite a few good subjects and their quality is amazing. Software engineering focuses primarily on development while something labeled as IT will usually cover a wider range. I'd check the course content for the different units being taught under each degree programme before deciding. Just see if it has what interests you. Still, my recommendation is towards Moratuwa.

I've been at Virtusa for 11+ years and I can say that we don't have a preference in degrees, etc. What does change though is where we look for campus hires via workshops, seminars, etc. My suggestion is to avoid HND as those are simply higher diplomas and far inferior to a first degree although it does serve as a decent starting point into the vocation. I did mine at Uni of London via RI and got taken aboard within 2 weeks of finishing my final exam. That was via a workshop the company conducted for RI.

My suggestion is to select a degree that enables you to touch on the key and modern areas of software engineering if that's what you're after. Try APIIT or SLIIT as the BIT degree offered by UCSC brings in way too many candidates so you may get lost in the flood so to speak. My top pick would be Uni of Moratuwa. IIT is decent too. What's important is you understanding what you want from a degree and selecting the right subjects to give you the knowledge to put stuff in practice. SLIIT is more practical in terms of its subjects and assignments from what I've seen.

All in all, any degree is pointless without the ability to think and put things into practice. We've seen this with many MSc students who come in for interviews without much work experience as they're completely unable to put things into practice. So, really any degree is as good as your own self-esteem and capability.

This storyline seems to be drifting further and further away from the original with the awesome darkspawn threat, the architect, etc. There are now 3 different stories in the same universe with 3 different characters that it'll be quite some hell to stitch together without loose ends. Sad, really.

Thanks all!

Nice work man, what technique did you use for the close ups with the 105mm?

will put some of my work soon

The 105mm was a dedicated macro lens and was shot hand held with a wider aperture cos the DoF is so tiny. I didn't focus it down to 1:1 though, but almost everything I shoot now is 1:1 macro using a tripod and R1C1 macro flash.

Oh forgot to add that the retina display really does wonders. It's difficult to get used to anything lower once you've seen the high pixel density of retina. The 625 works at a significantly lower pixel density if I'm not mistaken.

Get the 4S.. You'll sleep easier. I have the 4S and I bought a 620 for my mom. I know the differences between the 620 and the 625 and although I have the 4S, I kinda have this itch towards the Lumias. But then I just take a few trawls through the menus of the Lumia vs. the 4S and I realise why I'll stick with Apple. Don't mistake me though: Windows Phone is great and I love it, but it'll forever be my mistress while the Apple remains by my side.

Oh, by the way battery life on the 4S is awful, but I'm still alright with it given how awesome iOS is.

BTW, I think SLT has started blocking off torrent sites.. Completely unable to access Kickass Torrents since yesterday via SLT, but could over Dialog.. Not sure what else is going to be taken down.. Can anyone with an SLT connection check if they're experiencing the same?

Well, let's just say that I've been buying stuff from Rajiv even before EGS was formed and started sometime way back in 1996 if I'm not mistaken with the purchase of a Pentium I 100Mhz based PC :). The PC was home delivered, installed and I was given a complete demo on the product - good memories. Since then, I've been continuously getting most of my equipment from them and have no complaints whatsoever (except for one tiny instance in the past, which got resolved anyways :D) with service nor the quality of products being sold. I'm glad that he's still keeping EGS going and the service they provide is undoubtedly the best in the island (with RL coming in a close second ;)) IMO. Unlike the other places I visit, when I purchase something from EGS it isn't based around the warranty, but it is rather centered around the trust and friendship I place in Rajiv.

I honestly think he deserves applause for his numerous years of service in the industry.
