Communal Assistance / Re: eBay (How does the taxing work)
« on: June 10, 2011, 07:22:19 pm »
i've made a lot of orders of ebay but never an electronic, as in a phone or console.
Was wondering should i order a console will i get held at customs and if so how much tax would i

This is my personal experience - I imported a ps3 slim from Singapore. Terrible experience as the tax for Video Games is still pretty high. Everything combined it was around 50% of the disclosed value. So I had to pay around 20k in duty. However, at those places you get clearing agents. So used one of those guys to give happy money to the customs officer and released the goods for 10k instead of 20k.

Bottom line, I paid very close to the same amount I would've paid for a system which has been imported by normal electronic shops minus any local warranty offered by them.

Other electronics have very little duty something in the ranges of 7% - 12% of declared value. Whereas video games and consoles fall into a very high category still. Therefore, you are taking a risk

On the other hand, sometimes you might get lucky and they might deliver it to your doorstep without any delays or duties which is very rare (happened to me once out of like ten times).

ooh can't wait, getting it from LL... Kinda worried about the graphical quality though, it looks a little outdated as the unpacked size is around 5GB? Maybe they used really mediocre-res textures or something. Fracking Consoles!!!

correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't using Toslink or coaxial to the Z5500 bypass the DAC on the card itself and end up using the Z5500's DAC?

BTW, any place in Sri Lanka that sells Xonar cardS?

never mind, there was a thread about xonar's in SL and looks like only EPSI had em... guess its gotta be imported sux

Thanx a bunch for pointing me towards the Xonar cards. I'm currently looking at the STX but was also interested in the HDAV. However, the HDAV is not in stock at newegg Or Amazon Or any other reputable retailer that i know of.

My only issue with the STX is, whether it will be able to support 5.1 surround sound for Movies like my blu-rays and the mkv's that have 5.1 sound. How will the STX connect to the Z5500? Would I have to go with a toslink connection or does the STX support direct speaker output to a 5.1 speaker system? From the specs all i could gather was that it does Virtual Surround sound. So I guess the real question would be, will the Z5500's 5.1 configuration go to waste as I feel this card is made for good headphones or stereo speakers?

I might have completely misunderstood the specification for the STX so please lemme know whether I've got it wrong...

Thans a lot man.

Hi Audiophiles,

my X-fi has begun its death run with a lot crackling and popping noises.

I want to know what the best sound card is for Music and Movies (gaming doesn't matter coz I use a Logitech G930 which has its own hardware/drivers).

The speaker system is a 5.1 Logitech Z5500.

So the real question is, are the X-fi's still the best or what about things like turtlebeach, AUZENTECH , Asus Xonar???

After around Xinfinity attempts I finally managed to get the [email protected] but the cost was great - I've two sore thumbs and I'm damn sure the left one is bleeding :P - had it in ICE for around 2 minutes *sigh*

Was playing in Medium all the way to end because anything higher meant frustratingly numerous amounts of attempts at beating the bosses.

I tried the honourable methods of combos, special moves and x-ray moves but sure as hell nothing seemed to have the desired effects, the khan would get me every single time.

Finally I had to succumb to CHEAP tricks like teleporting behind him and sweeping him (sweep the leg ie karate kid style:P). Oh not to mention lightning projectile spamming also seemed to work from afar if u get going but that's not always gauranteed.

Bottom line is, one of the hardest boss battles in my history of mortal kombat :( and i've two sore thumbs as proof.

Anybody else wanna share their MK experiences?

Sounds really interesting. Seems like a Hollywood-esque take on Quantum States ie Quantum Entanglement and Quantum Incompleteness as aptly described by Schrödinger's thought experiment about his stupid cat (Schrödinger's Cat)

He imagined the combining of a cat and atom in a sealed box with the cat's life solely depending on the state of this particular STATE of a Subatomic particle. The hypothetical experiment was to highlight the craziness and paradoxical nature of quantum mechanics. According to his experient, Schrödinger's cat would be both DEAD and Alive at the same time until the observable gave state to it. In other words, measuring the state collapses all calculated probabilities to collapse to the value defined by the measurement (observing the cat in some way or the other giving it either death or life). So technically, until u observe with some meaningful measurement, the cat is both dead and alive at the same time.

Wow, pretending to understand quantum physics hurts my brain. I think Einstein once said something very similar.

BTW, Schrödinger was merely trying to promote the paradoxes of quantum states and observable probabilities and was not a proponent of killing cats via crazy subatomic radioactive death particles :P

Tying back to this cool new show, sounds like two or more states of large scale systems (son is alive, son is dead, mother is alive, mother is dead) - love when hollywood tries to bring in "REAL" SCIENCE :D - hope some kid invents the star trek transporter :D

if u've no sli and no $300 ;) then 590 is hot. Also i think the performance difference is marginal. Where r u planning on getting the 590 from? haven't seen any in Sri Lanka?

planing to get a GTX590, but should i wait fro next release or should i go for 590, i need your ideas.

2 x 580's in SLI yield better performance in most situations. Do u have an SLI enabled board?

I dont get why I get minus karma for doin nothing :(
