Communal Assistance / Re: SLT has given me free xtra GB!
« on: November 18, 2017, 11:43:08 am »
I have 15 GB given for my Family package (1499 rental, 33GB peak 66GB total)
Anyone know whats the tradeoff? also is that 15 for both night and day?
Isn't that only 6GB extra?

Most ISPs increased the data cap for post-paid data packages by 10%, due to that tax reduction thing. So a 60GB web family package now has 66GB. (33GB peak and 33GB off-peak)

Hardware / Peripherals / Re: Earphone sound quality checking
« on: October 27, 2017, 01:03:41 am »
As topic mention is there is a good and reliable method or a software to check sound quality on earphones?
That is impossible.

This is what basically happens when you use any form of speakers,
Your device will generate a digital audio signal ---> using that digital signal, speakers generate analog audio signal (pressure waves in air)

You can check that digital signal with software. Things like Bass levels (low frequency waves), treble (high frequency) etc.

But what the speakers actually generate from these digital signals, cannot be checked by any software. You'll have to use your ear. You can use audio sensors if you really want, but even if you did, it will still be based on personal preference.

What you can do is check reviews for the specific earphone you have in mind. They'll tell you a great deal about sound reproduction quality.

I'll probably purchase a smart TV from Wow for the display.
What graphics card you should buy also depends on your screen's resolution. Do you have any particular screen in mind? If it's just a HD TV (they usually have 1366X768 resolution) you won't need a very powerful graphics card.

However, I may need to go with a board that has integrated graphics as I will be purchasing in steps like you said. MBs don't really affect performance, right?
Intel integrated graphics are now on the CPU, so don't worry about the motherboard in that regard.

As for the SSDs, it is difficult to say whether you should invest in one or not, especially since you have a tight budget. But SSDs are great to have, and does more than give you quick boot times for the OS and applications. They have remarkably low latency compared to hard disks so your PC will simply be a lot faster in responding to your inputs. I personally can't stand to use PCs that don't have SSDs. I even ended up installing a SSD in my entry level laptop that I use for my university work.

What will you use your PC for (other than casual gaming)? Will you use your PC a lot for other stuff as well? If so, you will definitely appreciate having a SSD. If not, you may skip it. You can always buy one later when you have more cash. And SSDs are only going to get better and cheaper.

Not really sure what exactly you are talking about here.
There are two main types of SSDs. SATA based ones (same port as your hard disk, these are the most popular) and PCIe based ones (these use PCIe ports or M.2 ports, these are even faster than SATA SSDs). NVME is just a standard/protocol. M.2 SSDs are slightly more expensive than SATA SSDs so they may not be the best for you.

EDIT:
Nah I was serious, he's a cranky old man who can't stand youngsters advancing in the PC hardware industry.
EGS did have a point considering OP's actual requirements and budget constraints. You should not insult other people without any actual reason to do so. You'll only make yourself look like an immature child.

If you're buying a PC buy from Redline or Nanotek. Other places don't know how to handle their customers, Some mislead them and some have atrocious customer service.
You statement implies that all shops except Redline and Nanotek, don't know how to handle their customers. A very bold statement and not one that should be made lightly. You're not wrong regarding most shops in places like Unity Plaza, but not for every shop in the country unless you have done an extensive survey.

And I personally disagree with you because I've had pleasant experiences as a customer with shops other than Redline. (never been to Nanotek)

No Game Zone / Re: anyone having a problem with SLT ADSL?
« on: October 05, 2017, 09:48:55 am »
it was a one time only extra gb quota i guess. you can use it either daytime or night time
It wasn't a one time thing. Due to that tax thing, they increased internet capacity by 10%. But this was mid September so they couldn't directly change the monthly quota that was already allocated. So they gave it as ExtraGB. ExtraGB is automatically used when your normal bandwidth is over. Problem with ExtraGB is that for some reason it takes a long time to establish a connection with a server when using this ExtraGB.

From October and onwards they added this extra capacity directly to your monthly capacity.

If you're using SLT web family package, it should be 66GB now. (33GB peak and 33GB off-peak)

Just make sure to a buy a laptop with an SSD. Laptops with only hard drives are painfully slow, regardless of other specs.

No Game Zone / EXMO 2017 - Engineering and Innovation Exhibition
« on: April 26, 2017, 10:14:00 pm »
Hello people, there will be an Engineering and Technological Exhibition held at University of Moratuwa. It will be held on April 28 and 29 from 9.00 A.M to 9.00 P.M.

https://www.facebook.com/EXMOUOM/

There will be interesting things such as cutting edge technology discussions & demonstrations, awareness sessions, final year projects, robotics (and many other things from many fields) for you to see. I will also be there at Computer Science & Engineering department discussing about virtual reality (there will also be demonstrations using an Oculus Rift DK2).  :D

Anyone can visit and leave at any time. You don't have to spend a cent. Cheers. :)

Edit:- Though I posted this in the No Game Zone section, there will be gaming related things as well.

I would recommend going with Ryzen 1500X, since i5-7500 wiil be outdated within a year..
No it won't. Intel desktop i5s are not to be underestimated, they'll serve you good for a long time. Hell I'm still using a 2nd gen i5 (about 5 years old) and it can handle modern games like a champ. Otherwise I'd have upgraded it by now.

5. SSD - Good for performance boost at the start of the PC for Gaming u may hv 5% better
A SSD will give you even more benefits than that. Install the operating system in it. That will take a lot of stress away from hard drives which means the HDDs will last longer. Apps, games and the OS will boot a lot faster. Overall a SSD greatly improves system responsiveness.

Btw I don't think this thread is in the correct section.

You must be living close to a tower
Nope. It's because there aren't many people using a Dialog network (especially after midnight) near where I live.

The e3276(STC one) costs 4750/= from yaathra computers and k4606 is 2700/= from dongle.lk. And EGS (if thats the ONLY Unity Plaza shop), dont sell e3276 anymore :(
That price for the e3276 is way too high. There's a whole bunch of shops in Unity Plaza that sell this. Pay a visit there and ask around. However they might have no idea if you ask for the Huawei e3276 dongle. Just tell them to show you the box of any Huawei dongle they have. You can see for yourself if it's the e3276.

My primary question now before I spend money is, would a new dongle with DC-HSPA+ increase my speed ? FYI I live in Mount Lavinia - as per my approximations, in between 2 towers, 1 in junction and the other in Attidiya - Im placed right in the center of these 2 towers.
I think it should. You'll likely get HSPA+ coverage at Mount Lavinia. However this is your safest bet,
My advice is if you can borrow one from someone test it out.

But I wish ppl would just name me some places to buy a dongle cheap.
I bought two e3276 dongles from unity plaza quite some time ago. I'll check if I still have their warranty papers. If so, I'll mention the shop names here.

Im looking at Huawei K4606 which has DC-HSPA+ and HSPA+ and costs much less than e3276.
Are there significant other advantages than DC-HSPA+ from gettin e3276 ?
What were the prices of Huawei K4606 and e3276? There shouldn't be huge price difference between them. And both support DC-HSPA+.

I bought my e3276 for about 3k. It's the STC one and got it from a shop in Unity Plaza. It had a one year warranty period. Been using it for years without any issues.

I can download about 25GB using the nighttime package, and I don't even get HSPA+. Past midnight, download speeds are around 9-10 Mbps. That's a bit more than 1MB/s.

Could be the same thing actually...
They're the same thing. I bought that one from Redline recently.
