General / Re: What is your SLT broadband speed? (2019)
« on: April 27, 2019, 01:58:57 pm »
I'm on fiber so usually it stays at least on 10MBps. while the max is 12.5MBps. sometimes weird stuff happens when i download games via steam or origin cos both clients reports of speeds that goes like 15MBps and i know i cannot be true due to max limit is set to 12.5MBps.

I think you mean MB/s.

Anyway not too interested in Fiber data/speeds as I mentioned my apartment can't get it unfortunately.

Just looking for data regarding broadband

General / What is your SLT broadband speed? (2019)
« on: April 27, 2019, 12:07:56 am »
Hi guys,

I need help. I've been battling with Dialog 4G for years now - I've requested them to upgrade me to their 4.5G connection (that they supposedly have), and they did, but are now saying the 4.5G towers in my area are not enabled due to not enough 4.5G customers???

Anyway, while speedtest usually gives me good results via Dialog - real life, actual usage is complete dogshit.

Unfortunately, I live in an apartment which has installed copper cabling and getting a fiber connection is not possible apparently.

I am now considering to switch back to SLT broadband (used it about 4 years back) and was wondering if it has gotten any better. They now advertise up to 21 Mbps??

To be honest gaming is not my primary need right now, I just need stable speeds where I don't feel like bashing my head against a wall every time I go online.

HENCE - wanted to know if you guys could kindly share some speed test results (those of you who are on SLT broadband only pls) so I know the real life results in 2019.

// Any other internet-related suggestions are more than welcome //

Hardware / Peripherals / Re: Connecting laptop to dual monitor setup
« on: July 23, 2017, 01:11:56 pm »
Splitter will only allow you to duplicate the same image on both, even you extend the screen both monitors will show up as one. USB is certainly possible but it gets old after a bit plugging in three or four connectors daily (if you're using it permanently fixed to the monitors then this is best) and it also wears out the ports. Docking station is best since it means you connect only one thunderbolt, USB 3.0 or USB C cable to the laptop and everything works. Depending on your laptop you can even get one that allows you to just set the laptop on it and it will connect via a port on the bottom automatically.

Thanks for the reply! (again) :p

Any idea where I could purchase a decent docking station over here?

Hi guys, I need to connect my laptop to a dual monitor setup and I was wondering what the best possible way to achieve this..

I have one HDMI port in my laptop. So I connect to one monitor ez pz. When it comes to the second monitor, after doing some reading - I learnt that that I could use either one of the following:

- HDMI splitter
- USB to HDMI convertor
- Docking station

Could someone with experience in a similar configuration advise me on which option would be better, and where I could purchase the above items in Sri Lanka!

I assume you mean WiFi strength and speed? Cause you can do nothing about the cellular connection other than move the router around or get an external connection. The router/modem is proprietary and you can't change it without Dialog immediately washing their hands of any support. Also keep in mind that the Huawei unit is a modem as well as a router, and changing it means that you'll need to find a similar all in one unit or a modem with a SIM slot, both of which are not made by any manufacturers that make quality network items.

For WiFi strength and internal Network speed (which does affect the internet speed especially with multiple devices accessing at once) you need an Access Point. This essentially performs the same wireless duties of a router without the ability to assign IPs through DHCP (really simplified explanation). It plugs straight into the router and you configure it with whatever settings you wish. I'll go ahead and recommend Ubiquiti, and indeed what I use right now, the UniFi UAP-AC-LR. LR depicts it is the long range model with higher power transmitters. It's sleek as hell, is powered over Ethernet, has a ton of options for configuring it however you want and can easily handle the relatively demanding load I have on my network (Daily access and file transfers to a NAS as well as nightly backups, media streaming from a local HTPC, general website browsing and YouTube / Amazon Prime Video, many of which happen at the same time). Covers nearly every inch of a 3 story 5000 sq. Foot house, with the wireless extending out to the road too! Point being, it's bloody powerful enterprise-grade stuff. It is meant to be used with many APs covering the entire house, but it works just as well with only one!

Thanks very much for the detailed answer!

I was thinking for example, if the dialog Huawei router shows my signal as being 3/5 bars - to purchase a more powerful router with better antennas (is this even a thing?) by which I'll be able to achieve 4/5 or 5/5 bars in terms of signal.

I recently moved to kohuwala, and I assume I should be able to get better signals over here but it's being blocked by my roof/walls..

Let me read up on Access Points, with your recommended model in mind! Thanks.

Hi all,

So i'm currently using Dialog's Huwaei router (the one with 2 antennas) and I was wondering whether there are any better ones that I could potentially purchase for an increased signal strength and speed.

I'll be going to Singapore for a few days and will be able to pick one up from there, is there any specifications i need to look out for?

Not really experienced with router buying, so if anyone can drop me a few recommendations that would be great!

I live in an apartment where I can get 20Mbps at like 5.30am but then it drops down to 2-6Mbps at all other times. My signal strength is at 3/5 bars most of the time, dropping to 2/5 bars occasionally.

Would I be able to request this external antenna and would it even help? Or is it just slow because of the number of people/wifi connections in close proximity to me?

A friend of mine told me that anyone can purchase an external antenna without any hassle by just paying ~20k or something. Can anyone verify this claim?

If you ever start selling parts let me know about the pair of 1TBs :).

That would be too much hassle for me, mate. Don't think I'll sell them separately! :)
