I've been at Virtusa for 11+ years and I can say that we don't have a preference in degrees, etc. What does change though is where we look for campus hires via workshops, seminars, etc. My suggestion is to avoid HND as those are simply higher diplomas and far inferior to a first degree although it does serve as a decent starting point into the vocation. I did mine at Uni of London via RI and got taken aboard within 2 weeks of finishing my final exam. That was via a workshop the company conducted for RI.

My suggestion is to select a degree that enables you to touch on the key and modern areas of software engineering if that's what you're after. Try APIIT or SLIIT as the BIT degree offered by UCSC brings in way too many candidates so you may get lost in the flood so to speak. My top pick would be Uni of Moratuwa. IIT is decent too. What's important is you understanding what you want from a degree and selecting the right subjects to give you the knowledge to put stuff in practice. SLIIT is more practical in terms of its subjects and assignments from what I've seen.

All in all, any degree is pointless without the ability to think and put things into practice. We've seen this with many MSc students who come in for interviews without much work experience as they're completely unable to put things into practice. So, really any degree is as good as your own self-esteem and capability.

Thanx bro I will keep that in mind.

Any idea about the  B.Sc. (Hons) in Information Technology offered by the University of Moratuwa? I think I have enough Z to get into that. Is there a difference between that and a degree in software engineering?

Ur expectations are too high, if your also looking for input from people in MIT or WSO2 then you come to the wrong site. This is a Sri lankan gaming site, you wont find people from MIT roaming here and there in gamer.lk

Btw why do you want people from MIT to comment ? What could they possibly add ?

Exactly what Delux said :)

APIIT is ok but i wouldnt call a apiit the best place to do IT in sri lanka. if you want to study in a private institute and work in SL either choose IIT, SLIIT or NSBM. colombo uni mean UCSC yea? i think thats your best option. not that is it better than other places if you are a hardworking person. your chances will be slightly high with UCSC. but that again depends on how you work. all in all there's no place called the best in IT industry. you work hard, learn well, get good grades with a couple of good projects, you are recognized. otherwise you'll just be another dude with an IT degree. doesnt matter which place you study at. GL
THIS ^ (Y)

Also computer firms in SL do not hire you based on your degree but how well you have worked. You need to sit for a practical test at any of these firms and that is how assess your perfromance. In order to get shortlisted to do these tests you need produce what you have accompolished (and that isn't necessarily the degree or class).

Don't forget that Software Enginerring is a creative module and the only way to show off your creativity is through your work which is coincidently fueled through your thinking. :)

PS: lack of creativity is why we have crappy software everywhere ;D
PPS: the field you have chosen is quite flexible than you think.
PPPS: Employers hiring based on the prestigiousness of your degree aren't worth working for.

Thanx for the input guys :)

It would be great if guys from WSO2, MIT can give a input :)

Well something that is recognized internationally will most definitely be recognized locally.

So you are saying APIIT is better?

No Game Zone / Software Engineering degree whats better? Please help :)

Hey guys I did ALz last year from maths stream and got 1A and 2Bs. (A for Chem and B for physics and c.maths z score- 1.71). Can someone from the industry enlighten me on how to proceed. In one hand I can do Software Engineering at APIIT which is awarded by Staffordshire Uni UK or I can do Software Engineering at Colombo Uni. Can someone tell me which is more recognized both locally(WSO2, MIT, Virtusa) and internationally?
