Title: Amazon.com is shipping to SL
Post by: i5hananto on November 12, 2016, 10:07:18 pm
Hi guys i just noticed today that amazon has allowed shipping a lot of items to SL!!

So far everything that i checked (games, computer parts) can be shipped except for TVs. seller needs to be amazon though.

only downside is shipping is very expensive. (shipping a bluray movie costs $9, a ps4 game $40 and a monitor $200)

they calculate and charge taxes to be paid at customs when you purchase, which could be a good or bad thing.

An asus gtx 1080 could be shipped for $782.26 which is still cheaper than buying locally

Fingers crossed that we'll get the black friday deals as well  ;D

Edit- Just checked, if its sold by amazon its ships to Sri Lanka.

lets see, if we get black friday discounts then it should be much cheaper than here. and i guess the base price of the item matters as well, looks like it costs the same to ship a 1080 and a 480, so it might not be worth it to ship cheap or heavy items

and it looks like they offer a grouping option to make shipments cheaper, so if a couple of us order multiple items at once it could be better

Something else about group purchases. taxes for a $20 ps4 game is about $7 and shipping is $40.

but when i put 4 $20 games in the cart taxes only went up to $14. so taxes per game went down to $3.5 each and shipping also remained at $40. which is about $10 per game.

you actually get warranty, but i guess you need to handle the rma yourself but it might be worth it since the probability of a device failing is actually quite low  :)

lets assume 1 out of a 1000 cards fail which come out of the factory within one year (which is ridiculously high). that probability is 0.1%. so is it worth it to pay that extra 10k?

for reference the failure rate for the recent samsung phones were actually 100s of phones out of millions which was considered unacceptably high

That's a ridiculously low estimate. High end cards have an average of 3-5% failure rate in the first year and around 1% for low end cards.

It's better to buy the big shots from amazon rather than small ones, like gpus and stuff. Big shots come in handy! ::)

im guessing their courier service is dhl. since they show that the shipment time as 2 - 7 days. as far as i know dhl handles customs payments. and i guess amazon pulls the tax information from dhl and not sri lanka customs directly

I just ordered a USB HDD dock from Az via Kapruka & they're back to 3 weeks waiting time. Ironically it's the same time via Amazon India (which doesn't seem to ship directly to SL)

I've had one experience ordering stuff from Amazon via DHL & the situation customs wise wasn't too great - the courier obviously didn't care less about whether an item was in the right tax bracket or not nor was it going to negotiate so I had to pay up or leave it. Which is fair enough I suppose, I didn't have the time to haggle with customs myself (don't even know if that was an option).

Of all the stuff they are shipping, they don't seem to be shipping the Kindle to SL. God damn.

EDIT: They actually do ship it. Was looking at the wrong search result.
