Out of curiosity, what in heaven's name makes you think its more logical to choose a chipset that suits your needs rather than a processor? I mean, that makes approximately 0 sense.

How about, maybe, just maybe, you decide which PROCESSOR suits your needs better and then pick whichever mobo supports it?

Im st00pid. That was just my $.0.02... Wasnt meant to be offensive, just sarcastic. And I second the P55+860/750 proposition. X58+9xx is overkill.

ya its just for gaming bro ... so u telling me to go for p55 ... not x58 ... is p55 future proof ... like x58 will get a new processor released by intel with more cores right ?

p55 is intels newest ...the x58 platform is almost 2 years old i think the x58 will be replaced by x68 which will have the ICH11R south bridge and will have SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0 support sometime next year... if u are so worried about future proof get a p55 motherboard with SATA 3 6Gbps and USB 3.0 ... like the asus and gigabyte boards do...

ROFL WHAT!? NO!

X58 and P55 belong to the same generation (*5*). The gap between release dates was just a few months and not the outrageous 2 years you suggested, which furthermore is the norm with intel, who release a top of the line X-- chipset followed by the more budget priented P-- line (usually accompanied by the IGP integrated G-- line).

i5 a.k.a. Lynnfield processors  are pretty much the same as i7 a.k.a. Bloomfield processors with some features disabled (multi-threading, QPI Interconnect, 1 RAM channel etc).

The X68 will be accompanied by the P65 so they have similar lifespans.

If either 1156 or 1366 is going to die, it'll most probably 1156, so 1366 is the better option future proofing wise (but I think either both will die pretty soon).

Your misunderstanding was that you assumed the i5 platform debuted with Westmere. It didn't.

umm as i recall the i7 9** series was introduced in  October 2008  and and the P55 series was introduced last october... thats one year difference and i said the x58 is ALMOST 2 years (that is to this moment which is may 2010)  few months to go to make it 2 years if you are so keen about the dates, but im sure the time will pass without us realizing it...

i have to agree with what you said about P65 accompanying the x65 that is the normal way intel rolls out their line up of chipesets.... but IMO im sure the sockets wont change and the 1156 and 1366 will stay alive even for 2 more generation of chipsets... cause as uve seen although the core i7 980x is of 32nm its still a 1366 processor

disabled is not quite the correct word i might add for those features you said comparing the Lynnfield and the Bloomfield processors... cause if it was disabled you could enable it... like AMD's phenom x 3 which is a quad core processor with one core disabled and can be unlocked ...
