Re-installing updated Win 10 from 7.
« on: August 13, 2017, 10:57:49 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm having a laptop which has bought in 2009 with Windows 7. During the time when Microsoft let the old widows version update to 10, did the update.

Now I want to format the computer since its running slow.

My question is that, if I format and re-install windows 10 and will it be able to activated with the key which for 7?

What is the most suitable way to do this without any hassle?

Appreciate your support.

No you may not be able to obtain the license if you format. You should have made a recovery of Windows 10 or you should get the key of Windows 10 before you format. Then you can use the same key to activate the windows 10.

How to get a key for that? Where can I get detailed information?

Thanks.

This is not correct

Windows 10 license key is registered with your Microsoft account online, If you have the anniversary update. If not it's linked to your hardware configuration. You shouldn't have a problem formatting and updating as long as your hardware configuration hasn't changed significantly or if it's linked to your MS account.

IIRC there is some restriction with inherited win 7 keys that doesn't allow them to be linked (don't quote me on that). I remember trying linking the key on my mother's Elitebook (which came with Windows 7 originally) and for some reason it wouldn't do so. Ended up just risking it and it auto-activated itself after the fresh install.

I believe that most Win 7 laptops with UEFI have the key embedded in them, so for those it's a simple case of reinstalling Windows.

There are 2 options for you
1. Install Windows 10 directly and use the product key of Windows 10.
2. Install and activate Windows 7/8 then upgrade to Windows 10.
I am using method#2.
Hope to help you
